A NEW BEGINNING!

It's in the air! Something is about to happen! How often did we say this in the early spring months in Sweden; the air filled with anticipation, the return of birds and flowers and a new green season.

Today I say so again, in the midst of winter, looking out from my office window in Heber City, Utah. But from my American porch and new horizon, the anticipation is all connected to the new president. We all hope President Obama will undo what has been so badly done in the past eight years, and create a new vision for the USA - and for the world. He can. And we will.

But my hope goes beyond that. I recently had the pleasure of meeting with Utah's governor Jon Huntsman. He is a Republican, and a gut reaction would say he represents nothing good for the environment. However, this dynamic governor is something else and in me he instills hope for the future. He has taken several impressive initiatives, and the ambition to make Utah the solar state of the USA is fantastic. And his direct bi-lateral talks with regional Chinese leaders (and he speaks Chinese!) on environmental issues is an admirable initiative worth international recognition. If political initiatives can span the entire political spectrum, I can see the light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel.

Presidents, governors and everybody else - let's make the next decade the ten years when we see real and necessary change, and prove once and for all that all work for "the environment" is good for all of us. We must all understand that the words economy and ecology are derived from the same Greek word, oikos, which means household. To care for our household and our family in the broadest sense is the most human thing we can do.
